Before You Throw Away That Old Doll, Read This

I can't tell you how many times I've brought home an old doll that someone else thought was beyond saving.

Sometimes the hair is a tangled mess. Sometimes the eyes don't work. Sometimes the doll is absolutely filthy, or she's missing a shoe, or her clothes look like they've spent the last thirty years at the bottom of a well. And sometimes, when I bring one of these dolls home, my husband looks at me like I've completely lost my mind.

But I can usually see something he doesn't. I see what that doll could look like with a little care and attention.

After years of restoring vintage dolls, I've learned that a doll doesn't necessarily need to be in beautiful condition to be worth saving. In fact, some of my favorite projects have started with dolls that looked pretty hopeless.

In fact, the little Tiny Tears shown in the photo was given away to me because her owner thought she was only fit for the trash. But she couldn't bear to throw her out. She thought maybe I could use her for parts. However, I could see all her issues were things I could repair and now she's on her way to beautiful again.

Here are a few things to consider before giving up on an old doll.

1. Dirty doesn't necessarily mean damaged

A surprising amount of what makes an old doll look terrible can simply be accumulated dirt.

Dolls that have spent years in attics, basements, closets, and storage boxes can collect all sorts of dust and grime. And once you clean them up, they can look entirely different.

But there's something important to remember. Not all dolls can be cleaned the same way.

An all-vinyl fashion doll is very different from a composition doll, a hard plastic doll, or a doll with a cloth body. Some vintage finishes, painted details, adhesives, and materials are easily damaged by water or cleaning products.

Before you start scrubbing, identify what the doll is made of and research the safest cleaning method.

Always begin with the gentlest appropriate approach. You can do far more damage trying to clean a doll too aggressively than you would by leaving a little dirt alone.

2. Messy hair doesn't always mean ruined hair

Have you ever found an old doll with hair sticking out in every direction? Or hair that's become a giant tangled knot? It can be tempting to grab a brush and start pulling.

Please don't! Depending on the doll, you could end up pulling out hair plugs, breaking fragile fibers, or damaging an old wig.

Different dolls have different types of hair, and the correct restoration method depends on what you're working with. Some hair can be carefully detangled and restyled. Other hair is fragile enough that it needs a much more conservative approach.

The important thing is not to rush.

I recently restored a vintage Christmas caroler doll whose hair was a complete mess.

Once I'd cleaned her up and worked on her hair, she looked like an entirely different doll. Sometimes the transformation really is remarkable.

3. Broken doll eyes may be repairable

Now we're getting into one of my favorite areas of doll restoration: Vintage sleep eyes!

There's something so charming about those old dolls whose eyes open when you stand them up and close when you lay them down. Until the mechanism stops working. Then you have a doll who looks permanently sleepy, startled, or as though she's winking at you.

I've seen plenty of dolls with eye problems over the years. And the good news is that some of these problems can be repaired. The trick is understanding how the eye mechanism works and what is actually causing the problem.

Trying to force a stuck mechanism can make things worse. And because different dolls have different eye constructions, you can't assume that a repair method that works on one doll will work on another.

That's one reason I created my Saucy Walker eye repair tutorial.

I wanted collectors to be able to see the process and understand what they're working with before attempting a repair.

4. Missing clothing isn't the end of the world

Sometimes you'll find a wonderful old doll, but her original outfit is long gone. That doesn't mean she can't be enjoyed again. You may be able to find an appropriate vintage replacement, make a new outfit, or dress her in something that suits her era.

One of the things I've always loved about dolls is the creativity involved. You can sew, knit, crochet, hunt for vintage clothing, or put together a completely new look.

Of course, if you're working with a rare or historically significant doll, it's important to consider how replacement clothing or restoration might affect its collectible value. But for an ordinary doll that you simply want to enjoy and display, a pretty outfit can give her a whole new life.

5. Not every doll needs a complete makeover

This might be the most important lesson I've learned: Just because you can restore something doesn't necessarily mean you should.

A vintage doll is a little piece of history. Sometimes the goal should be preservation rather than making her look brand-new.

Original paint, clothing, finishes, and even signs of age can be important to collectors. And some restoration methods are difficult or impossible to reverse.

Before doing anything drastic, ask yourself what you're trying to accomplish. Are you preserving a valuable collectible? Restoring a childhood doll with sentimental value? Or rescuing a common vintage doll so she can be enjoyed again?

Those are three very different projects. And they may call for three very different approaches.

6. Learning the right technique makes all the difference

One of the reasons people hesitate to repair old dolls is that they're afraid of making things worse. And I understand that.

When you're holding a doll that's fifty, sixty, or seventy years old, you don't want to be the person who damages her. But learning how dolls were constructed and how their different mechanisms work can make restoration much less intimidating.

That's why I love teaching doll repair. I enjoy showing people how to approach a problem, understand what's happening, and make thoughtful decisions about what to do next.

Sometimes the best restoration is a dramatic transformation. Sometimes it's a very small repair. And sometimes the best choice is to leave something exactly as it is.

Knowing the difference is part of becoming a good doll restorer.
